Double nine thus symbolizes longevity and the wish for a long life. Traditionally, people climb mountains, drink chrysanthemum wine, and wear dogwood (zhuyu) to ward off evil. Today, it has become China’s Elderly Day (老人节, Lǎorén Jié) – a time to show respect and care for parents, grandparents, and older relatives.
